Parliament Sends Security Report to Interior Minister, and Parliamentary Coalition Demands Prosecution of Gunmen Breaking into Parliament

YPWatch, Sept., 9 – Parliament approved sending the report of the Special Committee assigned to identify security concerns in need of government explanation to the Minister of Interior. The government will discuss the concerns in Parliament next Saturday.
The report lists a set of important issues recently raised by MPs and society, including the killing of two civilians in a drone strike in Al-Baidha and Hadramout, as well as the assassination attempt against the general secretary of the Yemen Socialist Party Dr. Yassin Saeed Noaman, and the Minister of Transportation Wa’ed Ba Dheetb.
The report also included the Interior Minister’s explanation of the bombing incidents on Al-Sab’een Square and the Police Academy, the assassination of the commander of the southern military region General Salem Qatan, as well as the attacks against the Ministries of Defense and Interior.
In today’s session, many MPs demanded the Committee’s report to include the attack against the presidential complex, targeting former president Ali Abdullah Saleh and other officials. Parliament Speaker Yaha Ali Al-Ra’e responded that the prosecution will complete the investigations, before referring the case to the judiciary.
In the same context, MPs touched on the incident of gunmen breaking into Parliament premises. MP Nabil Al-Basha condemned the presence of dozens of gunmen at Parliament, saying “do not the MPs feel ashamed, what will they say to the Minister of Interior when he comes and sees hundreds of gunmen in front of Parliament?”.
Al-Basha added, “this Parliament won’t be able to achieve its tasks with the presence of gunmen in front of the Parliament,” demanding to reconsider the security situation of Sana’a, which has made the city unsuitable as capital of the country.
The Parliamentary Coalition for Change condemned the break-in, emphasizing its rejection of, “behaviors that target the GCC initiative and its tentative mechanism, in an attempt to draw the country into violence.” The group demands to hold the involved individuals accountable for the act.
The coalition is calling on the brokers of the GCC initiative represented in the United Nations to condemn such actions and to take clear actions against perpetrators and their supporters.
In addition, the coalition demanded the president to reconsider the security staff assigned to protect Parliament, so as to preserve the respect towards the legislative institutions and to provide a secure atmosphere, enabling Parliament to achieve its tasks.
In another context, Parliament listened to the understanding memorandum regarding the draft laws of the Public Hygiene Fund and Funds of Hygiene and Gardening proposed by the Minister of Local Administration, Mohammed Al-Yazedi. Parliament ratified the legislation, referring the two draft laws to the specialized Committee for further consideration and reporting.
